Different Types of Fetishes and Kinks
When we first started Moodtime.co.za, we thought we knew pretty much all there was to know about sex. But were we wrong! We learned pretty quickly that knowing the right sex terminology was essential, both in assisting customers with what they are looking for and also to avoid embarrassing moments!
Oh, if you are wondering if any given sex act is really a thing, keep in mind these wise words "Everything is a thing”. In other words, if you can dream it, you can do it — or at least rest assured that someone else has probably tried to as well.
With that being said, here are some sex terms you probably didn't learn in sex ed.
BDSM
Well this is probably the most well know terminology on our list, particularly after the 50 Shades movies where it became mainstream. This is an abbreviation for Bondage, Discipline (or Domination), Sadism (or Submission) and Masochism. BDSM includes an extremely wide range of activities, from light spanking and dominant / submissive role playing to bondage parties and pain play.
Pegging
Simply put, it is the practise in which a woman anally penetrates a man with a strap-on dildo. Men may find the stimulation of the anus and specifically the prostate extremely enjoyable. There are a variety of strap-ons available (in fact all dildos that have a suction cup base are compatible with our harnesses), large, small, vibrating, fantasy you name it we stock it. The typical strap on has a harness and a dildo which is attached to the harness via an O-ring or straps.
Animal Role-Play / Pet Play
This is role play between humans, where one participant plays the role of a particular animal. It can be often found in BDSM contexts where an individual may take part in a dominant / submissive relationship by being treated like an animal. Some popular role plays are kitten-play, puppy-play and fox role-plays. You are only limited to your imagination. Moodtime sells many role play accessories from puppy, fox, pony and bunny tail anal plugs and hoods. We also sell dog bone gags, collars and leads.
Cock Caging or Male Chastity
Male chastity is a very popular kink. These adult devices deny sexual pleasure by caging the penis and preventing the wearer getting an erection. As with anything, there are a variety of styles, but the most common cage we stock is the lockable, metal cage, that the partner or dominant has the key to. If the male starts to feel aroused, the cage constricts him sometimes resulting in pain. Some couples see it as a symbol of commitment, others as a tool in BDSM and orgasm denial.
Cuckolding
Basically this is a fetish or kink where a person in a relationship gets turned on by witnessing their partner having sex with someone else, obviously not great if you have a jealous streak so treat this one with caution if you are the jealous type as you don’t want to end up in jail.
Figging
This is a practise that was initially used as corporal punishment but has been adopted by the BDSM community. It involves inserting a piece of peeled ginger root into the anus or vagina, resulting in a painful burning sensation and often arousal, as ginger is considered a powerful aphrodisiac. It is also used in conjunction with impact play to add to the sensations of pain and pleasure.
Findom
This stands for financial domination. In simple terms, the submissive purchases expensive gifts, sends money or hands over complete financial control, generally to a dominant female. The act of handing over financial responsibility is said to be a form of escapism for the submissive. In South African context this would be known as a blesser relationship where usually the man provides money and gifts to a younger woman for sex.
Collared
Collars are often considered a powerful symbol in the world of BDSM. Wearing a collar indicates a person’s submissive or slave status in a BDSM relationship. To many in the BDSM community it can have a similar significance to a wedding ring.
Shibari/Kinbaku - Rope Bondage
Is an ancient Japanese artistic form of rope bondage, Shibari techniques follow a fine line between pleasure and pain. Knots and ties are positioned to heighten sensuality and stimulate pressure points and erogenous zones. It's actually quite visually beautiful and very interesting to watch. It is a difficult technique so generally more basic rope bondage techniques are used.
Mummification
This form of bondage is the act of completely giving up control to another person and certainly the sensory deprivation would be stimulating. Essentially, mummification is the act of being wrapped up and completely immobilised. It is considered an extreme form of bondage and is definitely not to be entered into lightly. Participants should have a clear discussion beforehand about limits and a safe-word. The wrap itself can vary from cling wrap type products, bandages, static bondage tape, leather and custom made bags specific to this type of bondage.
Temperature Play
This is a very popular technique that uses heat or cold to stimulate erogenous zones. You can start off slow, perhaps with a warming or cooling lubricant. A simple ice cube can be electrifying when used on your partner, especially if the partner is blindfolded and/or retrained to the bed. On the warming side of things, we sell warming massage candles, you light the candles and pour liquid over your partner massaging into their body. A more intense version are drip candles, which you light and drip the hot wax onto the skin. Glass toys are perfect for temperature play, as you can easily warm up and cool down, using water.
Sensation Play
This practise involves the enhancement of the senses, sometimes by the deprivation of others. For example, when you take away sight by the use of a blindfold, other senses seem to become stronger. So the touch of a feather or drizzle of warm honey can become extremely titillating.
Sounding
Urethral sounding is a practise where pleasure is derived from inserting objects into the urethra of the penis. Originally this was a medical procedure to stretch the urethra, but men quickly learned it could be a very pleasurable experience as the urethra if filled with nerve endings. There are typically two types of objects used, Penis Plugs and Sounds. Generally they are made from either metal or silicone. These pleasure objects should be sterilised before each session and lots of lube should be used to avoid damaging the soft tissue of the urethra.
Impact Play
Impact play refers to any impact on the body done for sexual gratification, from spanking to whips and crops. When engaging in impact play, remember to pick a safe word and continually check in with one another to ensure the level of pain is desirable. It's also important to stick to areas on the body which are safe to spank or tap on with a crop, which means fleshy, meaty areas away from the organs, such as the butt and thighs. CBT
You may be familiar with cognitive behavioural therapy, a helpful form of talk therapy. However, within the world of kink, CBT refers to "cock and ball torture." This form of CBT can be therapeutic for people with penises interested in having a dominatrix inflict pain on their genitals, through the use of ropes, whips, or even chastity devices.
Queening
Queening is just a glamorous name for sitting on someone's face. There's nothing more to it than that.
Scissoring
Scissoring is most often thought of as the territory of same-sex, female-identified couples. It's usually considered to be two partners rubbing their vulvas against each other's, but can also be defined as one partner rubbing their vulva against other body parts of their partner's (including the thighs and butt). In so-called "classic" scissor position, partners' legs intersect so that they look like — you guessed it — scissors. Porn (especially porn made for the male gaze) has probably hyped up scissoring as a more popular act among women who have sex with women than it actually is in real life, but plenty of people love it.
